Especially means "exceptionally"", "in a noteworthy manner". Specially on the other hand means "particularly", "in a distinguishing manner".

In this context, Sulfur dioxide is an especially serious pollutant, NOT Sulfur dioxide is a specially serious pollutant because of the difference in meaning.

Also, "Sulfur dioxide dimishes the respiratory system's ability". This is different from saying "Sulfur dioxide dimishes the capability of the respiratory system". It does not diminish the capability, but the respiratory system's ability.

Hope this helps.
