Schistosomiasis!!!

by amysky_0205 » Wed Dec 12, 2012 8:03 pm
Schistosomiasis, a disease caused by a parasitic worm, is prevalent in hot, humid climates, and it has become more widespread as irrigation projects have enlarged the habitat of the freshwater snails that are the parasite's hosts for part of its life cycle.

(a) the freshwater snails that are the parasite's hosts for part of its life cycle

(b) the freshwater snails that are the parasite's hosts in part of their life cycle

(c) freshwater snails which become the parasite's hosts for part of its life cycles

(d) freshwater snails which become the hosts of the parasite during the parasite's life cycle

(e) parasite's hosts, freshwater snails which become their hostsduring their life cycles

OA: B

I would like to ask what's wrong with all the options.
Also, FOR part and IN part, what's the differences between these 2?
is it because the meaning is different??

thank u so much!

I am not convinced with the OA.

In option (B), what does "their" refer to? "fresh water snails" ?But I think the meaning of the sentence says the parasite's life cycle - not the snails .

Correct me if I am wrong

I would go with option (D)

In fact the OA should be option A

First, the noun phrase freshwater snails needs to be preceded by 'the' because we are talking about particular type of freshwater snails and not about freshwater snails in general.

Second, whose life cycle are we talking about? It is parasite's life cycle and not snails'.

In B 'their' seems to refer to snails and imply that the author is talking about snails' life cycle; this does not contribute to the intended meaning of the sentence.

Bumping this thread to get some clarification.

The OA seems to be the best answer but one question, we can use "its" to refer to possessive nouns? In this question, we have parasite's and i'm assuming that 'its' refers back to parasite's. Let me know if my understanding of this sentence is wrong.
