profile review and advice

by manu25 » Thu Feb 03, 2011 2:14 am
Hi

Can somebody please evaluate my profile

B.TECH in computers science from top 20 college in India

Work Experience : Telecommunications Billing and Consulting

2 Years of experience with AMDOCS ( world leading telecom company )

then i joined France Telecom / Orange : leading cellularite worldover , joined because of bigger brand name

But work was quite unfullfilling and left it after 5 months only , that time i presume i make a mistake , i should have stuck there for some more time

that time i joined a very small company but with a bigger role in a lead position , i am currently woring here for past 1 year

Now , i am looking to pursue MBA from B-schoool in US .. I am targeting top 20 US B-schools .
Post MBA .. i want to move into a consulting domain preferably at telecom side

Now my concern is , should i switch to a bigger company and get a bigger brand on my resume ..or should i continue in this organization ... My question is will one more job switch will show me a job hopper in front of adcom..
can somebody please advice regarding this ..as i am in really confused situation ..i have a offer letter from HP .. should i accept it and go ahead or should i continue with this firm

manu25,

You have been at your current position for a year, so if you leave now you won't have to 'explain' anything. (The 5-month job you will have to explain.) Don't move to HP for the brand alone. Move there because it's a step forward in responsibility, pay, etc.

Good luck,

More than the explaining, you will have to tell your career story to the admissions committee. Obviously, too many jobs with no long term in any company has the potential to be seen as a job hopper with no long term plan and lack of any direction. But more than that, what story can you weave out of it? Having said that, MBA should not be your motivation to make any job changes. Just think that if, just by chance, you don't get into the B school, you are stuck in a new company or the same role !

Hi

Thanks for your advice .

I have one more concern , does working in a small company will devalue your profile .
Earlier i was working with bigger firm at a small role and less learning opportunities .

I am quite happy with my current job , but the thing is most of the folksl i had interacted , they had same notion that one need to work with bigger firm in order to get admission in top 20 US B-school .

Devalue? No. However, you need to understand that if you work for a company no one knows about, it will be YOUR job to convey to the adcom about your contribution and impact you have made in the company. At the same time, few things may work better for you. You may have more leadership opportunities to talk about in your essays than somone who is working in a super hierarchical jumbo company. At the end of the day, it all comes to whether YOU treat it as a weakness or a strength!

Hi

Thanks for your earlier replies and responses .

I am stuck in another trouble .
My current company (a small start-up) company is facing troubles because of lack of projects . As a result , it has started laying off folks .
From next week , i will be on bench and so i may also come in red area . Since i have contributed fairlly well in the organization ,i think i wont be the first one to get fired from my team .

Now the dilema is , i have an offer letter from Ericsson now , which will definitely be a next step forward in terms of responsibility and pay . But the concern is , it wont have any international experience opportunities as the projects will be of all domestic clients and moreover switching company now may put me as job-hopper in front of adcom .

What you will advice , shuld i go ahead and join ericsson or should i continue in current firm and then may be after 6 months switch to a firm that may provide me international experience as well .

Any advice/suggestions will be highly appreciated .
