got beat -- 700 (48/37)

by san2009 » Fri Jun 25, 2010 1:17 pm
just took GMAT and I got beat
scored 700
48 math
37 verbal

both scores are well below what I was scoring on MGMAT tests and GMAT prep tests

i am v prone to careless mistakes on the math section...

On the verbal section during my GMAt-- i was STUMPED on almost every question
every SC question seemed 5x harder...and my brain was unable to apply any of the knowledge i had learned and practiced in the 4 weeks before the test

Please share strategies for assessing performance, weaknesses as I plan to retake in 37 days.

p.s. my target score is >= 740

thanks

Congrats!

700 is a decent score but if you think you deserve better than go for it!

If you share more info about what you studied, especially in verbal, and how you were scoring in different areas (CR,SC,RC) in different tests then it will definitely be easier to comment.

Again congrats!

yeah, unless you're planning to go to a top10, that's a great score! Even if you are going to a top 10, you may still be able to make it with a strong app

san2009 - Congrats for achieving a good score. 700 is good score after all and not many people get that in first attempt.
You can go for one more attempt if you feel so.

Could you brief us out on your preparation strategy, kind of resources used, Practice test scores etc..

BTW, your score is ideal for me :-)
I am on a break !!

I basically went through the MGMAt strategy guides once...and took notes along the way. Then I completed all 3 OGs.
Next I went through all of their 6 MGMATs once and then the GMAT prep tests couple of times each.

Definitely going to retake. If anyone has suggestions as to what I should work on next, please advise.

to fellow Gmatt-ers - those who have taken the test once

did any of you feel that the language of the Sentence Correction questions - was very heavy...basically all scientific jargon...i found it much more difficult to quickly comprehend relative to any of the other tests I completed. If so, what steps did you take to better prepare yourself? Where do I find tough SC questions?

Also, the RC passages were harder and longer than most RC passages in OGs and on GMAT Prep. Any thoughts on what's the best place to find practice on tough RC passages?

Are LSAT CR and RC questions good practice for actual exam?

What do ppl think about Jeff Sackman's book with the difficult questions for quant section? Is it helpful?

Has anyone tried the OG companion that MGMAT came out with? Good value add or no?

What do people think of GMAT Fix Drills versus Kaplan Quiz Bank?

I really felt like using LSAT tests helped me with the RC and CR. I got two really long RC passages, and I didn't get phased because I was used to the LSAT RC passages. I've got nothing for SC though. That kicked my butt.
