First, I would like to provide you the required information and then I have few specific questions related to my profile evaluation. Request you to share your views.

Background:

1. Indian, male and 3 years of consulting and analytics experience with a niche but small firm. Strong growth, international work experience (2 years) and solid recommendations (from manager and senior leadership of a blue chip client)

2. IIT graduate, average GPA (8/10), good extra curricular exp; both sports and organizational activities.

3. Starting with a 1 year long sabbatical in Aug'14 to go on a backpacking trip and volunteering experience

4. Planning to apply in 2015. GMAT - 740.

5. Post MBA goals: Entrepreneurship or consulting in generic and sustainable tourism.

Questions:

1. Which schools are good or should be targeted for entrepreneurship or non-conventional career directions after MBA?

2. Does my profile and story sound competent for Top 10 programs like Stanford, INSEAD etc.?

Thank you.

Hey,
First of all pretty nice profile you got there!
740 (WOW!) + IIT + Consulting is a nice strong combo to start with, and there's no reason for you to apply out of Top 20. What schools are best for entrepreneurship? The best schools.

If you want nontraditional, most people would say Stanford, Yale and Ross, and I'd agree. But I'd not play down any of the other good schools. Life is a mystery. And as long as you go to the best school you can get into, you will be golden.

And I think you can apply to mostly Top 10, but throw in a few Top 20 schools for good measure (and a balanced strategy)

Hope this helps!

And if you have any further questions, just drop a line.

Hey there mate,

I'm with Jon this one - great GMAT, GPA, school, consulting, and international!

With a profile like that, you have a lot of doors open to you! You're in a position where a school selection discussion would be really useful. All the top schools are great for entrepreneurship but not all of the top schools are great for YOU. Fit is incredibly important.

You've still got a year before you pull the trigger on your apps so just stay focused on kicking butt and enjoying your trip! Then, when next summer rolls around, let's talk about your profile and schools that would be perfect for you!

I agree with the other posters. If you prepare a quality application, you should not need to go out of the top 10. Almost all of these schools will have Entrepreneurship Centers, Institutes and/or Programs. Some will also have Sustainability Centers, Institutes and/or Programs too.

Stanford GSB would be your dream as a top school with leadership in both entrepreneurship and sustainability. But other schools might work for you. A couple of weeks ago, I visited Johnson School at Cornell as part of our AIGAC conference. I spoke with Mark B. Milstein and Monica Touesnard who head their Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise. Johnson is a leader in Sustainability and Cornell (the undergraduate school) is a leader in Hospitality / Tourism (with the Cornell School of Hotel Administration). Cornell offers a Sustainability Immersion that you could tailor towards this industry. Johnson also has an Entrepreneurship and Innovation Institute. Yale SOM would help you if you want to go in non-traditional directions. At our conference, I also visited Yale SOM and listened to Assistant Dean and Director, Career Development Office Julia Zupko speak. She highlighted how 81% of hiring companies only hire one student meaning that they are really able to tailor for non-conventional career directions. Yale SOM Employment Statistics - https://som.yale.edu/our-programs/mba/ca ... statistics.

UNC Kenan-Flagler could be a good safety with its leadership in Entrepreneurship (https://www.kenan-flagler.unc.edu/entrepreneurship) and Sustainability (https://www.kenan-flagler.unc.edu/sustai ... prise.aspx)

You have plenty of options.
