Need some guidance

by gmatquant25 » Tue Mar 26, 2013 9:50 am
hello All, I am little tensed . I am not getting the confidence in the quant section and hesitating to take the Mock Tests .

My question is how many question should I practice to make sure its enough for the topic . I have 20 days left and need to focus a lot in quant .

Say for e.g Time and distance - There 're 100 different types of question If I go through the forums . I cannot do them all . I need to know at what point I should think I have done enough practice for that topic , Ideally how many questions should I cover ?

There is a lot of information we need to be able to help. What are your scores? What is your target? With what areas have you been struggling? What resources have you used?

You should be taking a mock exam ASAP if your exam is in 3 weeks (maybe even push back the exam).

Rather than spending time worrying about how your practice test will go, I suggest that you take a practice test right away. This will help you determine whether your fears are valid. Also, a practice test will help identify weaknesses (that you can begin working on). Finally, with 20 days remaining, you should begin taking practice tests on a regular basis so that you can work on your endurance and test-taking skills (e.g., time management).

Keep in mind that the GMAT is a test of your math and verbal skills AND it's a test of your test-taking skills. So, practice tests are a crucial part of your preparation.

Cheers,
Brent

Thank you brent and Jim .

I took my first Mock today from ManhattanGMAT . Landed with a score-q37 (44%) , V23 (30%)-510

I feel shattered . I can't sleep properly after seeing no progress after ~ 2 months of serious study . I have exam on 15th April and I was targeting 700 ( at least).

Could you please guide me from here . How do I prepare , I feel as if I need to go through all the topics one more time , unfortunately- I do not have the luxury to do so .

I want to do a serious study for 5-6 hours daily from now for the next 7 days . But I am confused from where to start . Could you please help me to lay out a plan . I am struggling with quant, to be honest . Material I have - All MGMAT guides .

Now, 1)how should I study for the next 14 days ?( Looks like I am equally bad in quant & Verbal)
2) What section to concentrate first ( verbal / Quant , or both )?
3) When to take the next test ?
4)Should I postpone the exam ? ( my target is 700+ and I have to write GMAT by 30th April under any circumstance.

I have invested a lot of money and time to prepare for GMAT ( plus, sacrificed my social life for 2 months ..I am feeling depressed ) ...

regards!

With just over 2 weeks left to prepare, I suggest that you focus on concepts that have the greatest return on investment (ROI). These are concepts that are tested frequently and require the least amount of time to learn. In my opinion, these concepts are:
- Sentence Correction
- Data Sufficiency strategies
- Percent
- Integer Properties
- Powers/roots
- Algebra
- Geometry

I say all of this because I see a lot of time-strapped students spending a lot of time agonizing over concepts like Probability and Counting, when these concepts are seldom tested.

Now CR and RC questions probably have the lowest ROI. I'm not saying that you shouldn't prepare for them; I'm just saying that improvements take a long time, especially for non-native English speakers. For CR, be sure you understand the various question types.

Finally, try to take several official practice tests in order to perfect your time management skills and build your endurance.

I hope that helps.

Cheers,
Brent

I would push back the exam as far as you can. Spend time working on the concepts Brent discusses and try to take an exam once a week (maybe 5 or 6 days) - much more frequently than this and you are not spending enough time reviewing material and your mistakes.

thank you for the suggestions .. I am all set to study 10+10+10 (sat, sun, mon) hours for 3 continues days . Cover all the major topics in quant . I am thinking of doing at least 30 problems from each of the topics with varieties . My concept is clear in quant , I have trouble applying the concepts . So , hopefully I can revise the question for the next couple of days ( the question i have got wrong) and then appear for another test .
Quite optimistic that the quant score will improve this time .

I have to write the exam by 30th April , I cannot postpone it under any circumstance . So the the only option is pull an all nighter on weekends , cover all the weak areas during that time . And take 2 tests every week to gauge the progress

thanks!!
