Age No Bar?

by ritusoni » Wed Jul 21, 2010 3:27 am
Hi,

I am a 35 year old women entrepreneur from India. I took the GMAT recently and secured a 730. I am now starting the application process.

I need to understand the impact my age (apparently very high!) will have on the selection process. Do I stand a chance in schools such as harvard/stanford/wharton?

I have 12 years of work experience in ecommerce, including 6 years of entrepreneurship (www.purplewrap.com). I do NOT want to focus on an eMBA as I am also looking at relocation which which allow me to gain experience in new geographies. This is the main aim of the MBA aswell, to expand my professional horizons and gain international exposure and perspective

Please help, I have been told that my age will pose a barrier in gaining admission to a school worth its salt....

Thanx,

Ritu
lifes like that!

Age should not be a problem. Infact your experience should work in favor of you. Your GMAT score is also really good.
I hope with your entrepreneurial background you are considering https://mitsloan.mit.edu/ https://entrepreneurship.mit.edu/ as well...

Hello,

I would say age could be an obstacle, at some programs more than others, not a barrier. The adcoms will review your application holistically, so if it's a weakness (and how much depends on other factors), it would still be seen in the overall context - you may well have other positives that outweigh this one weakness for various schools, and it does seem like you bring considerable strengths. (Also, keep in mind almost every qualified candidate has his/her stronger and weaker points.) Each school differs in how it weights various factors, so there isn't one formula that can be applied across the board.

One key factor that your age could impact is goals - if you are citing goals that adcoms know recruiters will be looking for 30-year-olds to fill, it would be a problem. If you delineate goals that you are capable of pursuing on your own initiative, via your own industry knowledge/contacts, etc., age will have less of a bearing.

Best regards,
