profile evaluation plz

by anu23 » Mon Jan 09, 2012 7:49 am
Hi
I am a doctor, graduated from Delhi University, India and currently working in Singapore for past 3 years. Not much of extracurricular activities to show in my resume, though have decent community involvements.
Expected GMAT ~720-740. GPA 3.5
I plan to do healthcare MBA or MPH/MBA combined programs
I have looked through few universities suitable for me

Columbia/Michigan/Minnesota/Kellogg/Wharton/Cornell/Bare ston

Of course these are the to notch programs available but I am not sure if I have any chance. Please suggest.

You should have an advantage in the application process because b-schools do not get a lot of MD applicants, just like Med schools don't get many MBA applicants. This will help you stand out, especially amongst others with an interest in a healthcare MBA--you would add tremendous value to study teams simply by being an MD. I notice youdon't have Duke on the list. Theirs is among the best healthcare MBAs out there--you should fold it into the mix. Let us know if you need help pulling everything together, because it's ultimately all about how you present your information no matter how outstanding your background is! Good Luck!

Thanks for your help Bryant. Yes, I am considering Duke as well, forgot to mention over here. But do you think with my kind of profile i would have a shot at above mentioned school? (nil previous relevant work ex etc.)
What should be the safe schools for me? What should be the average GMAT for my kind of profile? I am planning to apply for next year, any suggestions for further improving my profile?

Do you often get MD applicants in VeitasPrep? Are there any consultants with a similar background? If its possible, will you be able to direct me to the profiles of similar applicants who got through in one of above schools?

Thanks

You definitely would have a shot at those schools, especially if you post the kind of GMAT you are expecting. What differentiates you amongst the Indian applicant pool is 1) you work in Singapore and 2) you are a medical doctor (whereas most of the Indian applicant pool is IT or engineering). I have personally helped MDs as well as pharmacists and dentists and they always seem to make good impressions once we are able to get the story aligned correctly. It's all about a memorable story and standing out.

By the way, you would be a candidate I would recommend apply in the 3rd round this year if you can. Third round is a good round to apply if you have a very unique background, as schools are trying to round out the class and you could fit the bill. Plus, for schools who are coming up short on their international percentage as well, you could offer that angle too.
