I would be grateful if you could evaluate my profile till date and give me feedback. I am currently a PhD student in Biomedical Engineering and would take two more years to finish it. I would like to do MBA after 3 or 4 years but would like to strengthen my profile through the next few years.

Bio -
24 year female

*Acads -
GMAT - yet to take.
PhD coursework- 4.5/5; top 50 universities in the world - International PhD(Biomedical Engineering); Would have few papers published in my name by the time I finish. Have a provisional patent which expires soon (decided the product is not worth enough to waste one year on for the returns it promised so didn't pursue it to convert it to full time utility patent - did it as a part of coursework irrelevant to my research area)
Undergrad - 75%, third rank in our department; One of the good colleges in India, not IIT's, NIT's or BITS but well known.

*Work Experience - 2 yrs 1 month in IT - Quality Assurance for one of the Big 4 firms. Handling IT part for audit, tax applications. Have Harvard certifications related to management & Leadership. Promoted once. Won an award for commitment in one project.

*Extra-curriculars -
During PhD, teaching & supervising masters students.
Student Placement Advisor coordinating campus placement activities and information dissemination in undergrad.
Was into essay and debate competitions in school and won many certificates and prizes, some of them, state level. Was best literary student.
Did few other volunteer works - being scribe for blind, volunteer for company day, being part of firm place initiatives, volunteering in old age home, but these were not consistent.

*Post MBA Goals - to get into Product/R& D business development & expansion division in Medical devices industry companies.

*Hobbies - Playing Violin, Interested in Music, History buff, Avid reader, Have been learning French (Planning to get certification by next year).

I have an irrelevant experience of 2 years in IT (not aligning with my career aspirations - reason why I left job and took up PhD) but have no work experience in medical device industry itself. Due to PhD I cannot take up full time job without delaying graduation and MBA plans as well but planning to get into internships after some time. Would working for an year or two in medical device companies after finishing PhD, be a safe bet? I am not much worried about having doctorate and still going for MBA, as it is common in my domain but worried about lack of relevant experience.
As for non-profit & volunteer work, I didn't find volunteering in old age home or teaching at local schools much challenging and interesting so I quit after sometime. I am trying out new positions right now in several technical and career oriented clubs in the university and assuming they work out, would that that be a good value add to my profile?
Even with my profile right now, with PhD added, I don't think it's stellar enough to convince the jury. I am looking at INSEAD, ISB & other top schools. Can you give me advice on what can I do more to strengthen up my profile? Thanks!

Given your PhD of Biomedical Engineering relates to your post-MBA goals of working for a medical devices company, does your program or school have relationships with any medical device companies at which for you to try to obtain employment on a part-time basis prior to graduating? Gaining some pre-MBA experience would help your professional profile.

As for volunteering is there anything that fits with your passion? I would try to pursue that and if possible grow into a leadership position.

Best of luck,

Thanks for the reply.

My school does have some connections but they are not from my research domain. But I could only try in those starting from my penultimate year. Assuming I get into those, will 2 years of part-time experience be considered as proper experience? Also I'm thinking of interning as usually it's lets me keep my PhD scholarship but as per my knowledge interning will not be considered proper work-ex for MBA. In case I am not able to get into company as a part-time/full time employee, will interning be helping anyhow?

For volunteering, I am trying a couple of things and being in charge of few initiatives at the university. However, I am not into proper non-profit kind of things usually people do, like volunteering with red cross or at senior homes. Instead my interest is more in helping students with their career, holding events - that kind of stuff. Given the majority pool is into the former, does it hurt my chances anyhow?

Well it would still be better if you worked two years or so BEFORE you apply. Because the expectation is that you need to not only have work experience, but also know your industry before you think about moving to management. PhD graduates CAN get away with more than others given the length of the programs and the expertise that makes you "salable".. but still at least one year of full-time work experience (if not two) before you apply would be a better idea.
