US Top 5: Should I apply ?

by abhkapoor » Wed Jul 22, 2009 7:06 am
Hi,

I work for a start up financial valuations company ( Was one of the first employees and helped setting up the company. In addition setup the healthcare strategy consulting practice of this firm. Have previosly worked for Deloitte, Pwc, and E&Y.

Did my undergrad from Canada, BBA (GPA 2.8). During undergrad started my own pharmacy retail chain to fund my education, as a result I could not give 100% to my university.

My aim is to get a MBA degree with a focus in healthcare initiative. Post which I want to come back to India and expand the pharmacy and hospital chain my family owns.

My GMAT Score was 680.

I just want to know whether I have any chances at US Top 5, some of the consultants I spoke to have asked me to not to apply to top 5.

Ah...interesting question. I think you could apply to one or two on the basis of your work experience though your undergrad and GMAT may drag you down.

If you position yourself as a very successful entrepeneur and person with lots of experience starting up and managing business then I think you have a shot. Not a great shot and certainly not enough of a shot to justify applying only to top 5 schoosl but --if you can write killer essays-- I don't see any reason for you not to throw your hat in the ring for one or two.

Remember this, though: if you only applying to top schools you may be wasting your recommenders' time. Only apply if you think you have a very good shot at getting into at least one of the schools to which you are applying and have every intention of going no matter which one you get into.
Keep me in the loop about your thinking and let me know if you have any more questions.
