When should one feel ready to take the test?

by Kevinst » Sun Jul 01, 2012 4:59 pm
Hey,

I am planning to apply for MBA classes that start Fall 2013. Consequently I am not really under any time pressure and have been studying for the past couple of months.
My practice exam scores (1st GMATPrep, 2 MGMAT) are all in the 700-750 range (Q: 50, V: 41).

However, I don't feel ready yet. Especially when I take the MGMAT tests they throw one killer quant question after the other at me. In order to not exceed the time limit I often guess when I don't think that I'll solve the problem within 3 minutes.
As a result I get about 10 questions of the 37 wrong.
Having screwed up ~25% of the questions decreases my confidence of performing well on game day.

When did you decide that you studied enough and were ready to take the test?
Did the 700+ scorers of you also miss a fair amount of questions?
How did you avoid letting these big numbers of missed questions dragging you down? I feel like I have to continue my preparation until I only miss very few questions..

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

If you are currently scoring in the 700+ range, I'd recommend you sign up for the test asap.

You will always get a fair amount of questions wrong due to the adaptive nature of the test. As you answer questions correctly, they become increasingly more challenging. Even people with a perfect score answer a few questions wrong. The number of questions you're missing has less relevance than the difficulty of those questions.

If you exceed your target score in GMATPrep mocks at least once (do not include repeat tests), then you can go ahead and block the dates. You should have taken the test in ideal conditions i.e with essays, ir, 8 min breaks. Even an 800 scorer have chances to miss one or two questions, so no wonder 700 scorers miss at least 10 questions. Do not worry about the number of mistakes.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.
