Profile Evaluation..

by victory2g » Tue Jul 29, 2008 7:10 am
Ms Blackman,

I'm having trouble selecting the schools for which I am qualified. I was wondering if you could take a quick look at my profile and tell me if the schools I've shortlisted are realistic. If not, could you recommend the tier of schools for which I may actually be better suited.

GMAT: 750 (Q48/V45)
Undergrad:
B.S. Electrical/Computer Engineering from Univ of Texas at Austin
GPA: 3.10

Work experience: 1 year as a software engineer in semiconductor manufacturing process control at Advanced Micro Devices
3 years as Analyst/Consultant at Accenture Consulting, doing various project management, delivery life cycle projects at major clients. Experience included the management of several analysts and subcontractors.

Extracurricular activities:
- Climbed Mt Kilimanjaro & Mt Fuji in the name of various charities, raising over $10,000 for the Sub-Saharan AIDS epidemic - This included a major fund raising operation for which I put friends and family to work.
- Musician... lead singer for various a capella and rock 'n roll bands in Austin, TX and Washington, DC

Schools in mind: HBS, Wharton School of Bus., MIT Sloan, NYU Stern, Columbia, Haas, Chicago GSB.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Vijay

Dear Vijay,

All of the schools you target are realistic for you. Of course, you could select a school outside the top 10 as a safety option, but I'm not convinced you need to do that. What will make the difference is how strong your overall application package is. You have some interesting experiences (like climbing mountains!!) that you should leverage to your advantage. Spend the time on the essays and resume, ensuring your accomplishments are highlighted, and you should be fine.

Best of luck!
Lisa
