Connie paid a sales tax of 8% on her purchase. If the sales tax had been 5% she would have paid $12 less in sales tax. What was the total amount that Connie paid for the purchase including the sales tax?

let the orginal amt be P

0.08P - 0.05P = 12
p = 400

total amt paid = P + sales tax of 8% = 400 + 0.08 (400) = 432
