A

eliminate C and E because the correct idiom is "derive from" e.g. i derive pleasure from driving my car

eliminate B, that extra "the" is unnecessary.

eliminate D, GMAT hates being unless that sentence is the only one grammatically correct.

In 'B' the article (the) is used unnecessarily.
In 'C' 'The laying of' is awkward.
In 'D' there is a passive voice and the whole choice is awkward.

So, this question does not seem to have an answer.

What is meant by "avoid the source of this question" ??
- avoid the book/internetweb source/author/prep school ???
- avoid this kind of question.

if the answer is the 1st option, please explain why, who (the author/web site/prep school) the "bad" source is so we know who to avoid.
