Below Average Score....Any Hope???

by bsandhyav » Tue Dec 09, 2008 11:22 pm
Hi

I took my GMAT the day before and scored a dismal 520 Q 41 V21. I have never seen such a poor score in my practice tests. The lowest i ever scored was 590( on a bad day after work) and normally scored between 620-650.

Anyway, now i know this score is too pathetic to take me to any ranked university. I plan to give my GMAT again after a month, but will work on my applications in the meanwhile(I HAVE to go for FALL '09).

Background:
Indian Femal working in an IT insurance & health solutions company with 2 yrs experience(by Oct 2009),but not having a typical IT profile. I am working as the Project Management Officer with emphasis on the overall functioning and finances of the project. In the past 1+year with the company i have made a big leap in terms of progress. Moved from handling the processes of 1 project to about finances and processes of over 100 projects now. More into general Management now. You can say I am the assistant to the Head of Delivery Operations in company(He is the No. 3 man in the company).

Education:

Fairly decent academics. Awareded the Bachelor of Engineering degree with overall 1st class (63%) and distinction(73%) in final semester from mumbai university.

Extracurricular Activities:

Been the Joint Cultural Secretary of the students council for my college.
Organizes a number of technical and cultural events for the same
Been an active participant for collecting relief funds for flood victims.
Volunteer activity for AIDS affected and underpreviliged children

Aspirations:

Being practical,I am looking for a B-School which may not necessarily be highly ranked but one that offers a good oppurtunity for placements.

Keeping this in mind i am planning to apply to
1.San Fransisco State University
2.San Jose State University
before my 2nd attempt. If my score drastically improves in the 2nd attempt (which i hope should) then i will target some better colleges.

Any suggestions?
How do i go about my applications?
Which B-schools should i target?

P.S: Since i am an international applicant,i would be trying to apply for the 2nd round. So i will be choosing schools who have their 2nd round deadlines in late January or early March.

Dear bsandhyav,

I encourage you to visit our sticky on school selection for tips on identifying schools. Almost all US schools have applications online now, so you need to visit your target schools' websites to get your applications started as soon as possible.

Good luck,
Lisa
