Recommendation Advice

by tryinghard » Wed Apr 28, 2010 5:23 am
Hello,

I am planning to apply to a few schools in Europe and have a quick question about my recommendation.

My first recommendation is from my current employer; however I am in major dilemma for my second recommendation. In 2005 I worked for a consulting company in the UK. I left the company in Aug 2005 and got a contract from an ex client of the consulting company (my employer). I worked for this client on my own and set up a small outsourcing shop for the client.

My questions is will this be seen as unethical, I did not tell the consulting company about this, but there was no such agreement. Most people in the real world start a business like this only. I am planning to use the person from this company for my LOR.

I will really appreciate your advice.

Thanks,

Kapil

Thank you for your question. Unless you had a non-compete clause with the company, which you say you did not have, I don't see that it's unethical. Many people find jobs from clients and it actually speaks quite well for them.

Unless there is more to the story that led to your decision not to tell the consulting firm about it, I do not see it as a problem.
