Another "as much... as"

There are hopeful signs that we are shifting away from our heavy reliance on fosil fuels; more than ten times as much energy is generated through wind power now than it was in 1990.
A....
B. generated through wind power now as it was
C. generated through wind power now as was the case
D. now generated through wind power as it was
E. now generated through wind power than was the case

Answer: C

"as much.. as" should be used, so A, E out. Would anyone please explain the difference between B, C, D?
I'm confused about the position of "now". Is there a grammar rule for it?
also is it true that if you have the same subject for comparison in a "as much... as" sentence, then C is better than B?

Statements before and after " ; " must be independent

OA is the only one which is independent i.e no "It" which references other statement and also uses "as much as"

When two independent clauses are connected to each other either by the way of semi-colon or cordinating conjunction, pronoun can be used in the second independent clause to refer to the noun in the first independent clause.

As per me, "Independent" means one must not be dependent and hence..
Refer OG11 Q81 & Q97 option B (correct option) clearly accepts pronoun usage in Independent clause referring to noun in other independent clause, but Q18 option A OG denies this fact.

My reference sources are grammar books, which clearly acknowledge this fact but GMAT is in its own league.

Let me know if you find something or if could explain this.

Woa, I got it now, thanks a lot!
Another try of using a verb right after "as much as"
I like carrots as much as does my friend Carl. ---> inversion when comparing subjects of the verb

Is it kind of an analogy with answer C above?

Btw, I like carrots more than I do potatoes :wink:
