GPA Query - India Specific

Hi All

I am looking at a credible method of converting my Bachelors scores in percentage into a GPA score.

I have a separate marksheet for 4 years of education and a cumulative final score with weights for each years score.

I got to know of the WES website where I registered and provided details of my first year marks and received a GPA equivalent (for $5). Now I can do the same for each year and get the corresponding GPA.

The question is: How do I then get the final cumulative GPA? Can i just take a weighted average of the 4 GPAs? Will that be a valid GPA to submit to B-Schools?

Or is there any other source for GPA Conversion?

You can just take a weighted GPA. Keeping in mind two things 1. Conversion rates are somewhat flexible, and obviously you want to use this to your advantage. 2. For this very reason, just as important as your grade is the institution it comes from, and grades from "trusted and prestigious institutions" (IITs, etc.) carry more weight.

Hi Jon:

Thanks for the reply. Fortunately the deegree is from IIT!

When I was taking the GMAT and filling in the personal details at the start of the exam, they asked for the GPA and provided a sort of concordance list for corelating a percentage score to a GPA equivalent. As per that list my GPA corresponding to the percentage was a horrifying figure - less than 2!

However, when I entered the marks details for one year at the WES site, the equivalent GPA was much higher - more than 3!

So that is where my confusion lies. Does GMAC have a strict rule for GPA conversion that they follow? and If I provide a GPA based on the conversion from an external source (say WES) would that be considered valid? and will it not be considered as an act of misleading the adcoms by showing a higher GPA than what would have been recorded through the GMAC?

Even I need help on this. I have an undergrad engineering degree from University of Pune, India.
My transcripts clearly mention that the scoring system at the university grades students with grades much lower than other comparable universities in India. Hence our grades should not be converted to GPA's using standard system !!!!

Now Kelley school e-app is asking me to enter the GPA. My cumulative percentage for 4 years is around 56/100. Thats good enough to place me in the top 20% of the university result that year but if I convert this to GPA straight, I am doomed !!!

Different schools ask that you report grades differently: some, like Columbia, want you to convert to a 4.0 scale when you enter your info (see https://www4.gsb.columbia.edu/mba/learnm ... /start#GPA), others want you to preserve the native reporting used by your school. Transcripts are also always required.

Is there no option to send them the transcripts for the GPA calculation ? The site asks for entering subjects one at a time. That'll be a day's work to enter all 4 years' paper and practicals in there !!

Also does WES take into consideration the university grading system and the university standards for grading people ?

Okay, this is some tough stuff! And its a big problem for many of our clients. But you can;t really go ahead and start rescaling the conversion tables yourself. Cause everything would just turn into nonsense. So for example you would use WES, but then come up with a score that is far lower than your actual score. Soooo what can you do? answer: TELL them!!!

Use your optional essay to write something like "Although I got xxx, which according to an official conversion is x.x, this score places me within the top 5%, which would actually be the equivalent of y.y. I kindly ask the admissions committee to take this onto consideration when evaluating my grades."

Thanks a lot Jon. Just to clarify. The last Kelley essay reads as :
5. Is there anything else that you think we should know as we evaluate your application? If you believe your credentials and essays represent you fairly, you shouldn't feel obligated to answer this question.

The space allotted for this is 2 pages double spaced. So can I just write a short note regarding the issues we are discussing here and submit the essay ? Or do I need to do a detail 2 page essay work for this as well ?
