Applying through Consortium

by cr1985 » Wed Oct 19, 2011 5:13 pm
Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had some information on applying to schools through Consortium. I'm just a little confused as to how it works. Can I apply to multiple schools through their site and still be applying to the school, or do I have to do two separate applications - does this include interviews? What is the fellowship about, and are a few selected for scholarships? I heard about this through my former tutor who was Asain and I noted that I was Puerto Rican, so he mentioned it to me. Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi cr1985--

As a Puerto Rican, you're a demographic fit to the Consortium, and you should definitely take advantage of it if you can. It's essentially a streamlined process, designed to make it simpler (and less expensive) to apply to the participating schools. If you want to apply to a school that's a Consortium member, you will submit just one application to that school. There is a main Consortium essay that you will write, then each member school has different requirements; some of them ask that you do another essay, though typically it's much fewer total essays than if you were applying to each school directly. The idea is similar to the Common Application that many colleges now accept. Each school has its own policies re: interviewing etc. The other big benefit is that if you are admitted to Consortium school, you will also be considered for a possible Consortium fellowship. Additional info is here though it is a bit confusing! https://cgsm.org/students/Application%20 ... 9-1-11.pdf

Basically the intent is to make it easier to apply by reducing the number of essays you have to write; the wrinkle is that each school maintains its own policies. Most participating schools are very motivated to support applicants through the process so if you have questions you should definitely ask!

Hope this helps!

You must go with consortium.
The mission of the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management, an alliance of leading American business schools and some of our country's top corporations, is to enhance diversity in business education and leadership by helping to reduce the serious underrepresentation of African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans in both our member schools' enrollments and the ranks of management.

Some schools will require an additional interview (i.e Ross) separate from the Consortium one as part of the admissions process. The main things that stand out to me about applying through the Consortium is that you can apply up to 6 schools for only $300.

Consortium member schools offered more than 330 fellowships covering tuition and mandatory fees for two years of full-time study. Applicants who are admitted through The Consortium process and become Consortium members are considered for these prestigious fellowships. This is also a must vouch opportunity.

Also, besides just being Puerto Rican, if you can show some sort of dedication to the Consortium mission, i.e. involvement in your community, and to improving the lives of underrepresented minorities, it helps too!

A lot of people don't apply through the Consortium because they don't know about it. However, once people are made aware that the Consortium exists most opt to apply to a few schools because of the financial benefits (lower app fees and the chance at a full tuition fellowship).

1) You will write fewer essays
2) You give yourself a very good shot at a full-scholarship if you are accepted to the school
3) Being accepted to the Consortium can add another powerful group of people to your network.

You will bring diversity to the overall pool, you are heartily invited.

Thank you for the informative replies. I was concerned that the associated schools would frown upon the exclusion of writing their various essays in lieu of the one or two essays that only Consortium requires. Also, I'm guessing you only gain entrance to the fellowship upon admittance to one of the schools, right?

There are three steps in the decision process- Admission to the school, Membership in The Consortium, and Consortium fellowship.

You are right.

Under the Membership section, it asks you to list a Mission Recommender. Is this like reference to help support your reply to their mission statement essay?

Someone asked if you gain admittance into the fellowship upon admission to one of the schools, but that's inaccurate. Your acceptance as a member of the Consortium is independent of your acceptance into the b-school program, and furthermore, it is even independent of receiving the fellowship. In other words, you can be admitted into Yale through your Consortium application, but you might not be invited to be a member of the Consortium because your commitment to the mission is weak. And you can be admitted into both the b-school program and be invited into the Consortium, but not be granted the Fellowship.
