Actor to Harvard

by KenanGarrett » Fri Jun 29, 2012 7:55 am
To Whoever Has An Answer,

I graduated top of my class from Oregon State University's Honors College with a 4.0 GPA in Chemistry in 2011 (first person to do have this GPA with this major in over 15 years). However, I didn't go into that field for work. In fact, I'm now a full time actor in Hollywood. So for the past year my work experience has been that of an entrepreneur, or a small business owner, in which I am the product. Of course it has also become a priceless experience in my own philosophical and interpersonal growth. But I'm finding new inspiration in the prospect of public policy and business.

My question is this: Would I be taken seriously as an applicant to Harvard Business School, and/or the joint program with HLS or HKS (JDMBA/MBAMPP), with my very unique work experience? I am confident I can score 700+ on the GMAT, and of course I'd have my wonderful undergraduate record, but the other factors concern me. The thing is, business in Hollywood has taught me extremely valuable lessons in client relations, pitching products, among other things. However, as an actor there aren't really any "superiors" that would be able to write a recommendation.

Your thoughts?

Hi Actor,

I think that HBS and the top schools are always keen on some very non-traditional candidates, but what is your rush? With one year of work experience and no business experience, you are putting yourself in a low probability spot. Most candidates have at least 2-3 years of work experience when applying to HBS. I think if you were a regular actor on a well-known show, or also active in setting up internet/digital media projects (which requires modern marketing skills) then you would have a better shot.

Your GPA is very impressive in that major, and were you to score a 760/770 on the gmat then perhaps you could take a shot as an "extraordinary" young candidate. But sound advice would be to keep working, perhaps not just as an actor (in an entertainment related business), and build your story. It is harder to re apply to these programs, as you then need to show material growth, which is not always easy to do in 1-2 years.

Alex,

I appreciate the prompt reply. Regarding my "rush," well, to be admitted to HBS 2015, the latest on can apply is April of 2013! Additionally, not having a series regular or feature film credit certainly doesn't discount the amount of work one has had to do. I would hope that effort, insight, and hard work would be more attractive to HBS than something that indeed could be accomplished through effort + hard work, but many a time comes down to subjectivity and luck.

The idea of spearheading some digital media projects certainly makes a lot of sense. I've been reading screenplays and writing coverage for Adrian Grenier's (star of Entourage) production company. I'll definitely continue my work in this industry while preparing for my application. Sadly, the deadline seems to be much earlier than the starting date of class.

Garrett,

I appreciate that a lot of acting "success" is being in the right place at the right time and many who have not broken in may in fact be more talented than those who have. I meant no disrespect towards your efforts or talent. I was, however, in this limited forum, trying to give you some candid feedback on your question of being taken seriously by HBS. So my point was that to stand out at your age and in your profession, I imagine that yes some degree of "progress" would be required to be taken seriously. HBS is not really looking to admit actors, and certainly not ones who have not been at it very long. But they might be inclined if your accomplishments are stand out and start to touch on some broader business exposure--like producing or self financing your own film in wich you star.

I hope that makes sense.
