Again confused with the use of present participle modifier!!

Hi All,


Why is answer B incorrect here.

When the participle is separated from the independent clause (IC),

It should modify the subject or the verb of the IC ,or it should mention the result of the preceding

IC. If that is true then How B is incorrect here. Please explain in detail. Isn't "proclaiming" clearly

modifying "Olympics" here? Am I missing here something?


The Olympic Games helped to keep peace among the
pugnacious states of the Greek world in that a sacred
truce was proclaimed during the festival's month.

(A) world in that a sacred truce was proclaimed
during the festival's month

(B) world, proclaiming a sacred truce during the
festival's month

(C) world when they proclaimed a sacred truce for
the festival month

(D) world, for a sacred truce was proclaimed during
the month of the festival

(E) world by proclamation of a sacred truce that
was for the month of the festival

during the festival's month ( wrong because of ....in that...and the passive voice)

(B) world, proclaiming a sacred truce during the festival's month (things seems right here...except the meaning which reads .....olympic games are proclaming...


(C) world when they proclaimed a sacred truce for the festival month (better option)

(D) world, for a sacred truce was proclaimed during
the month of the festival

(E) world by proclamation of a sacred truce that
was for the month of the festival

no, you're not missing anything -- you just aren't thinking at all about what this sentence means, and/or thinking about what makes logical sense.

you are correct that "proclaiming" modifies "olympics" -- and this is exactly why that choice is incorrect!
the olympics can't "proclaim" anything, since they're ... the olympics.
i.e., a bunch of athletic games can't issue a proclamation; only people (or bodies made up of people, such as committees or governments) can issue a proclamation.

I have a doubt in this.

The other sentence correction question form OG says

Five fledgling sea eagles left their nests in western
Scotland this summer, bringing to 34 the number of
wild birds successfully raised since transplants from
Norway began in 1975.

and in this case 'bringing' is correct because it modifies the whole clause, and if 'bringing' were to modify only eagles then this sentence wont be logical. right?

similarly in the question that we are discussing, why should we consider option B wrong if it correctly modifies the whole clause? Why does "proclaiming" modify "olympics" in this case and not the case of the eagles?

I felt that the only reason option B should be rejected is because of "festival's month".

Please help me with this.

the previous clause never mentions who proclaimed the truce, so it's impossible for "..., proclaiming ..." to modify/describe that clause in any meaningful sense.
