OG12-Qn 71

by kishokbabu » Fri Jan 06, 2012 2:17 am
Carlotta can drive from her home to her office by
one of two possible routes. If she must also return
by one of these routes, what is the distance of the
shorter route?

(1) When she drives from her home to her office
by the shorter route and returns by the longer
route, she drives a total of 42 kilometers.
(2) When she drives both ways, from her home to
her office and back, by the longer route, she
drives a total of 46 kilometers.

I cannot understand the explanation for statement 2 in OG. can anyone explain this problem.

L -longer route, S- shorter route
st(2) implies Carlotta *from her home to her office and back* (interpretation after comma). She drives 2L=46
Combined st(1&2): L+S=42 and 2L=46 Sufficient

Let us assume that shorter route = s and longer route = l
(1) s + l = 42, there is one equation and two variables; NOT sufficient.

(2) 2l = 46 implies l = 23 but we cannot find s from this; NOT sufficient.

Combining (1) and (2), s + l = 42 and l = 23 implies we can find s; SUFFICIENT.

The correct answer is C.
