SC: Need help for explanation

by bowleyjoo » Tue Aug 12, 2008 5:19 am
The government's failing to keep it's pledges will earn the distrust of all the other nations in the alliance.

(A) government's failing to keep it's pledges
(B) government failing to keep it's pledges
(C) government's failing to keep its pledges
(D) government failing to keep its pledges
(E) governments failing to keep their pledges

I think it is A or C because possessive goverment's needs to be used. But A wins because the possessive "government's" is matched by "its".

D is correct

it's is wrong

its must stand for noun "government" not "government's"

governments" is not correct meaning

OA is C. I also thought the correct answer was D.

It should be 'The government... will earn' rather than 'failing... will earn' Am I right? But the OA is C. I don't get it. Why C is better than D.
