Let's take each statement one by one.

(1) |x| < 2

x can have many possible values such as 0, ±1, ±1.5, etc. Insufficient.

(2) |x| = 3x - 2

Say x = 3x - 2, then we have x = 1.

Again, say x = -(3x - 2), then we have x = 1/2. However, x = 1/2 is an invalid value since at x = 1/2, the value of 3x - 2 = 3*1/2 - 2 = -1/2, which is negative. Note that 3x - 2 = |x|, which is positive. So we must discard this.

Thus, x =1. Sufficient

The correct answer: B
