I did NOT beat the GMAT HUGE sad face.

by rj32s » Sun Jan 17, 2010 8:15 am
I must admit that I was owned by the GMAT! And with nobody to blame but myself...

I was fairly confident going into the exam that I didn't need to put much prep time into it to be successful, however, that is certainly NOT the case. I had very little time to prepare, seeing as I needed to submit scores by February for full time in August, and that was the completely wrong idea. I had about 2 weeks to prepare and waited for the last few days leading up to the exam to begin looking at the quantitative side. I was once strong in Math but that was several hundred moons ago. I do not remember the scoring, but the exam was:

500 Overall. 58 percentile English, 28 percentile Quantitative.

My question is, does anybody know the effects of now answering questions and how this affected my score?

My time expired on both sections with 6 questions remaining. I assume not answering 12 of 78 questions was incredibly damaging, (not that my score would have been strong regardless)

I'm fairly confident when I take it next time my preparation will be much, MUCH higher and I'm expecting around 650-700.

My advice to everyone on here is this: Take the test seriously. Not that many prospective students aren't, but REALLY prepare for the exam. The questions and concepts are not challenging, they simply require effort.

I hope nobody makes the mistake I made, and best of luck to all!

finishing the GMAT incomplete is an absolute killer, you will be penalised heavily for this.

even if you complete all questions and get your incorrect answers grouped together too closely the computer algorithm will punish you.

I strongly recommend you take proper time to prepare.

at the moment, I'm using the MGMAT books, use them all, and then log on and activate an account with Manhattan GMAT and as you prepare more and use their books and get more practice, take some practice tests to get you into the right kind of zone for actually doing the test in the allocated time! Trust me, I'm preparing right now and I used to struggle to finish quant in time, now I can finish the quant part of the test with 15-20 minutes to spare and am scoring around 44/60.

my verbal still needs work, but i'm confident that a diligent and structured approach to learning, ie get some books that work for you. build up your basic skills and knowledge in quant subjects, then CR, RC and SC, then start doing practice tests.

Yes the worst thing that you can do is NOT finish the exam. I hear it's twice as bad as getting the answer incorrect. If you think about it... the exam essentially optimizes itself to your ability level. so if you're around a 700 level towards the end.. and get 6 wrong... that's detrimental... but who knows maybe you guessed one or two right in there.. but if they're just unanswered... your score will be even lower.

When you practiced did you time yourself? I've already begun doing that now and I just started my prep. If I'm learning something then I obviously just learn the material.. but when I'm doing problem sets I always time myself. If I can't get the answer by the 1:45 mark, or at least know that i'm on the right track... i mark the question as "you need to study this more"...

Thanks for sharing your experience, but sorry to hear that it was a disappointing one. Be sure to focus on pacing in your next round of prep. Here's a post I recommend you review carefully: https://www.beatthegmat.com/gmat-practic ... s-t68.html

Good luck!
