1000CR Question No 17 : Test III

by samyak » Mon May 03, 2010 8:28 am
17. The fact that several of the largest senior citizens' organizations are constituted almost exclusively of middle-class elderly people has led critics to question the seriousness of those organizations' commitment to speaking out on behalf of the needs of economically disadvantaged elderly people.
Which of the following generalizations, if true, would help to substantiate the criticism implicit in the statement above?
(A) The ideology of an organization tends reflect the traditional political climate of its locale.
(B) The needs of disadvantaged elderly people differ in some ways from those of other disadvantaged groups within contemporary society.
(C) Organized groups are better able to publicize their problems and seek redress than individuals acting alone.
(D) Middle-class elderly people are more likely to join organizations than are economically disadvantaged elderly people.
(E) People usually join organizations whose purpose is to further the economic, political, or social interests of their members.

I'm not sure E is the right answer. Please help.

Are the questions from 1000CR reliable? Some of the questions are either too easy or in some cases the answer choices don't seem to make much sense or it could be me who is feeling the heat now  [/img]

@paddle_sweep , you are not the only one facing this problem mate , a lot of stuff is out there that has wrong answer or flawed question or both .

17.The fact that several of the largest senior citizens’ organizations are constituted almost exclusively of middle-class elderly people has led critics to question the seriousness of those organizations’ commitment to speaking out on behalf of the needs of economically disadvantaged elderly people.

This is my analysis of the question .

Premise : several of the largest senior citizens’ organizations are constituted almost exclusively of middle-class elderly people .

Conclusion : Critics believe that these organizations are not serious about its commitment to speaking out on behalf of the needs of economically disadvantaged elderly people. .

Which of the following generalizations, if true, would help to substantiate the criticism implicit in the statement above?

(A) The ideology of an organization tends reflect the traditional political climate of its locale.
[dose not effect the conclusion at all and can be eliminated .]
(B) The needs of disadvantaged elderly people differ in some ways from those of other disadvantaged groups within contemporary society.
[can be a contender , but dose not say why a society of middle-class elderly people will not be committed to its work , eliminate.]
(C) Organized groups are better able to publicize their problems and seek redress than individuals acting alone.
[Again an answer choice that dose not effect the conclusion at all , eliminate]
(D) Middle-class elderly people are more likely to join organizations than are economically disadvantaged elderly people.
[Now here we have some thing that links disadvantaged elderly people and middle-class elderly people. If the society is formed of people who enough money to survive how will the society understand what a economically challenged person needs . Thus provides proof for the authors conclusion, Correct]
(E) People usually join organizations whose purpose is to further the economic, political, or social interests of their members.
[This answer choice talks about people in general and not about senior citizens or elderly people . So this option is clearly not correct. ]

choice D states that "Middle-class elderly people are more likely to join organizations than are economically disadvantaged elderly people. "
but we are not concerned about this as in the stimulus it is already given that "the organizations almost exclusively include middle class ".

choice E states that "People usually join organizations whose purpose is to further the economic, political, or social interests of their members. " that means the concerned organizations will further the interests of the middle class and not disadvantage which is required.....

I might be wrong in my analysis ....pl. comment

This is exactly what I though about option E .

But tell me which of the above options should the author consider as the part of premise to support his conclusion . I think it should be D .

Why ? well E talk in general of people and could mean a society of young members who may only be concerned about welfare of young people in society and not the middle class old citizens, let alone economically disadvantaged elderly people.

So if this is the case would this support authors case . I dont think so .

Conclusion: the members are not serious towards economically disadvantaged people

we have to strengthen it

(D)
Middle-class elderly people are more likely to join organizations than are economically disadvantaged elderly people. -->but we don't know whether they'll be serious or not, incorrect

(E)People usually join organizations whose purpose is to further the economic, political, or social interests of their members -->this says the middle class elderly members are only interested in enhancing conditions of middle class ppl
thus they wont bother for economically disadvantaged ppl
-correct

Option E seems to be correct.

It implies that because middle class people joined, the organization is supposed to further the interest of middle class people. Thus is substantiates the criticism of the organization for not having spoken on behalf of the disadvantaged elderly people.
