it seems that i don't understand the answer for this questiom from book.
Is't it possoble to solve this question like this

Jack's salary in 1984 -x
Kate's salary in 1984 -y

1) x+y=50000

and

x+x*10/100 Jacks salary with 10% increase 1985
y+y*10/100 Kates salalry with 10% increase in 1985

2)x+x*10/100+y+y*10/100= 55000

so we gather this equation togather and solving

x+y=50000
x+x*10/100+y+y*10/100= 55000

so the answer is C.
what i'm missing here? i know that in OG there could not be incorrect question, but i don't get the explanation.

Stem

If J and K represents salary in 1985 and j and k in 1984
Then
J=1.1j
K=1.1k

We have to find j

Statement one
Tells us j+k=50,000. Not enough to find out j
hence insuff

Statement two
Tells us
J+K=55,000 or 1.1j+1.1k=55,000
Again not enough to find j
Hence Insuff

Combined
We get linear equations
1.1j+1.1k=55,000
j+k=50,000
But on observation , they are the same equation just the second is the first * 1.1

Hence Insuff

Answer E

the problem is that, OG 10 says the unswer must be E

Sorry
the answer is E

If you notice
1.1j+1.1k=55,000
j+k=50,000

are the same equation. equation 2 is nothing but equation 1 * 1.1

Hence we cannot solve and answer E
