Bombed the GMAT this morning - Thoughts

by lulusMBA » Mon Oct 27, 2008 10:03 pm
Hello all -

I personally bombed the GMAT this morning although I was aiming for a 720 or higher. My problem was not doing enough timed practice exams beforehand, and specifically, not focusing on a strategy for the hard quant questions.
When I started to do really well on the real exam today and started getting hit with the harder questions, I spent too much time and couldn't let go and just move on. I actually ended up not reaching 6 of the final questions on the math section, which I know means I would have gotten a really bad score no matter how well I did on the questions I did answer.

At that point, I decided to go through the rest of the exam while at the same time thinking about whether or not to cancel my scores - I'm almost sad to say my AWA and verbal were probably excellent. However, I knew I didn't want to apply with that low of a math score, especially since I know all the math concepts, but need to figure out how to optimize my time.

Really sad and disappointed right now, but determined to do better next time. At this point I'm buying a number of additional books - I only had Kaplan and the OG 11.

Any advice and/or any other feedback are highly appreciated.

Thanks and good luck to all!

Sounds like you're pretty solid on your verbal. I highly recommend picking up OG 10. DS is where a ton of people get hung up. I would definitely practice DS problems testing you on math properties (odd, even), substituting numbers for variables (testing limits), and problems with two equations.

It sounds like you cancelled the score - is that true? Maybe you didn't do as badly as you thought - I know that I always feel like I just got my butt kicked whenever I finish the quant section, but it always turns out fine. You can get a lot of questions wrong and still get a great score.

In any case, it sounds like you've already identified what you need to work on for next time - take more practice tests so that you have more confidence and your pacing is better.

Also, I don't think the number of books is the problem. I think the OG is all most people need - more than that and you might be doing "quantity over quality" in terms of your studying. Make sure you've truly broken down and analyzed every answer choice to every problem in the OG before you buy more books. If you feel like you still need more, I'd recommend the OG supplements (green and purple books).

But yes, take more tests. Here's a free one from Veritas:

Good luck!

Thanks you guys for your responses, I really appreciate it. I believe all of us here are pretty ambitious which makes it hard to accept defeat. I've been trying to focus on what to do better next time instead of focusing on how this shouldn't have happened. :)

Jim - I've already bought 3 more books from Amazon to do more questions! Now that I've read your post I'm considering returning them. I thought I went through the OG thoroughly but I guess I could go through again and make sure I know exactly how to tackle each problem.
Thanks for the link to the practice test - I wonder if you or anyone has a list of where to get timed practice so that I can go through as many as possible?

One last thing - how long would you recommend I wait before taking the test again? I'd like to take it again ASAP but don't want to rush into it. I'm thinking end of November?

Thanks again!

Most of the GMAT companies offer a free practice test - just go to each of their websites.

As for retaking, you have to wait at least 30 days, so end of November is the earliest you could take it. Four weeks is a pretty good amount of study - six is better, but it depends on your application deadlines, I suppose. The real key is to make sure that "it's different this time around" - you need to change your approach to studying. Breaking down problems is the key - you should practically have the problems in the OG memorized.

Another tip: people tend to go crazy studying math but really neglect verbal, especially RC and CR. Those count just as much as data sufficiency, so devote an equal amount of study time to CR and RC.
