Not sure, but I think it would it be A.

Princeton Review (the book I'm reading right now) talks about tense errors. The sentence has simple past tenses throughout with the "was". "Had been" is past perfect and "thrust" seems to be missing a tense.

Then there's "him" "he" "he was". I think "him" is the better choice.

Am I going in the right direction or all off?

The original sentence goes like : The man was always aware, sometimes proudly and sometimes resentfully, that he was a small-town Midwesterner who was thrust into a world that was dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and more polished people than him.

The sentence has two major parts,
1) describe/mention the qualities of the people(who are being compared with) i.e Wealthy, better-educated and polished. Now in the sentence, these 3 items/qualities must have the same form or in other word, they should be parallel. This is the first part should keep in mind.

2) The sentence is third-person account i.e the author is describing someone else's story/account, 2 ascertain this look at "man was aware...that he was". Because the sentence has a second-person account, we must use a third-person pronoun in the correct option. This is the second point u shud keep in mind. Also two a person is being compared with other people so comparison should be apt

Now look at the options

A) who was thrust into a world that was dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and more polished people than him

(B) who had been thrust into a world that was dominated by more wealthy, educated, and polished people than him

(C) who had been thrust into a world dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and people more polished than he was

(D) thrust into a world dominated by more wealthy, educated, and polished people than him

(E) thrust into a world dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and more polished people than he
