Good strengthen question...

by [email protected] » Sun Jun 17, 2012 1:08 am
Medical education in the United States has focused almost exclusively on curative medicine, while preventive care has been given scant attention. This is misguided. Medical schools should invest as much time in teaching their students how to prevent illness as in teaching them how to cure it.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument above?

A] Many contagious diseases can be prevented with vaccines.

B] In 1988, for every three cents the United States spent on prevention, it spent 97 cents on curative treatment.

C] The number of students enrolled in medical school is the highest it has ever been.

D] More people die each year from disease than from accidental causes.

E] As the population grows, the number of doctors in certain specialties has not been keeping pace.

The OA is A.

See it properly and you will find that it was difficult to find out the conclusion in this stimulus or the argument.

Answer b does not strengthen the argument, it only points out that more money was spent on curative treatment than on prevention. This information is in line with the strategy of teaching med students mostly curative medicine, the fact mentioned in the premises.

Answer c is irrelevant. The number of students is of no importance.

Answer d also does not influence the argument because health problems resulting both from accidents and from diseases need to be cured with the use of curative medicine.

e is also irrelevant - the number of doctors is not important.

Answer a is correct - if vaccines can prevent many contagious diseases then medical education should focus more on preventive care.
