CR- Number and percentage question

by SmarpanGamt » Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:31 pm
According to a recent magazine article, of those office employees who typically work 8 hours at the office each day but sometimes say that they will work at home on a particular day, 25 percent actually work less than one hour. At the same time, over 90 percent of those same office employees believe they are more productive working at home than working in their office.

The statements above, if true, best support which of the following conclusions about the office employees discussed in the article?
A.On average, the office employees working at home for a day work fewer hours than office employees working at the office.
B.10 percent of the office employees are less productive working from home than working in their office.
C.At least 15 percent of the office employees do not define productivity exclusively in terms of the number of hours worked.
D.At least 25 percent of the office employees can complete the same amount of work in one hour at home as in 8 hours at the office.
E.Some of the office employees make statements regarding their productivity that are not in fact true.

Please explain each choice

The statements above, if true, best support which of the following conclusions about the office employees discussed in the article?

A."On average, the office employees working at home for a day work fewer hours than office employees working at the office." Incorrect. 25 percent of them work only 1 hour. The remaining 75 percent may work significantly more than 8 hours. Therefore we cannot come to any conclusions about how many hours they work on average.

B."10 percent of the office employees are less productive working from home than working in their office." Incorrect. The argument says that 90 percent "believe" they are more productive. The other 10 percent may believe that they are as productive or less productive. Additionally, this answer choice states what they "are" rather than what they "believe".

C."At least 15 percent of the office employees do not define productivity exclusively in terms of the number of hours worked." Correct. If 25 percent of the office employees only work 1 hour a day at home and 90 percent claim to be more productive at home, it follows that at least 15 percent of the employees believe that they are more productive at home even though they only work 1 hour at home (25 percent who work only 1 hour a day at home minus the 10 percent who do not believe they are more productive at home). Therefore, at least 15 percent define productivity in ways other than the number of hours worked.

D."At least 25 percent of the office employees can complete the same amount of work in one hour at home as in 8 hours at the office." Incorrect. The argument does not contain information about how much work the employees can complete.

E."Some of the office employees make statements regarding their productivity that are not in fact true." Incorrect. The argument only refers to what the employees believe. Nowhere in the argument do the employees make statements of fact.

Please explain each choice
