Choices B, C, D, and E all say "Pope Innocent III had turned". The "had turned" does not seem to work with "until". For example, it would be strange to say: "he was saving for retirement until he had turned 65". A is the only choice without the "had". I too would like to know the source, this seems to be a little different than most GMAT questions.
