17. One of Ronald Reagan's first acts as President was to rescind President Carter's directive that any chemical banned on medical grounds in the United States be prohibited from sale to other countries.

(B) that any chemical be prohibited from sale to other countries that was banned on medical grounds in the United States
(C) prohibiting the sale to other countries of any chemical banned on medical grounds in the United States

the correct usage of the idiom:
prohibit X from Y

or

Prohibit Y

(A) that any chemical banned on medical grounds in the United States be prohibited from sale to other countries [prohibited from is wrong. prohibit X from Y is the correct form. also directive is something equivalent to 'Law'. you dont need a 'that' after directive or law. you need to describe what the law is directy]

(B) that any chemical be prohibited from sale to other countries that was banned on medical grounds in the United States [ same as A]

(C) prohibiting the sale to other countries of any chemical banned on medical grounds in the United States [my answer. i know this sounds awkward. but this is the better of the lot!. it correctly uses the idiom prohibit Y]

(D) prohibiting that any chemical banned on medical grounds in the United States is sold to other countries [use of 'prohibiting that' is wrong]

(E) that any chemical banned in the United States on medical grounds is prohibited from being sold to other countries[ same error as in A]

I went with C as well. I think "that" is unnecessary because I don't think that what follows that is an essential modifier.

Only a person or an entity can be "prohibited from" doing something. In this case, there is no subject actually trying to sell the banned chemicals. Hence the option (A) is ruled out. Am I correct?

Hello All,

Just a generic doubt about Idioms
Although we know that the correct idom is "Prohibit X from Y".
when writing the same in passive voice, can it be wrritten as " X be prohibitted from Y".

(B) psychologists have historically been forbidden to prescribe drugs for their patients, but in 2002 New Mexico began granting prescribing privileges
(C) psychologists have historically been forbidden to prescribe their patients drugs, but in 2002 in New Mexico, the privilege to prescribe began to be granted
(D) historically psychologists have been forbidden from prescribing their patients drugs, but in 2002 New Mexico began to grant the privilege of prescribing
(E) historically psychologists have been forbidden from prescribing drugs for their patients, but in 2002 in New Mexico, they began granting prescribing privileges

OA: B

This question was picked up from a different post. Now the correct Idiom to be used is Forbid X to Y.
However the correct answer employs the form X have been forbidden to Y.

Is this right ?????
Can we tweak Idioms or should they be used without any modifications
