Doesnt " are named " convey simple present tense which is used generally to indicate universal truths or something that happens habitually

It is not simple present tense. In, "they are named", "they" is the subject followed by helping verb "are" followed by past participle "named" - it is a noun phrase functioning as an "adjective" for the main subject "clovis points", answering the question "who/what" is named? ...followed by the rest of the prepositional phrase. In general, when we "define" something we use such phrases.

what does their in option A refer to?

Even though Clovis points, spear points with

Structure of the sentence,

Even though Clovis points(phrase),
spear points with longitudinal grooves chipped onto their faces (modifier),
they [subject] are [verb] named for the New Mexico site [phrase modifier] where they were first discovered in 1932. (clause)
Doesnt " are named " convey simple present tense which is used generally to indicate universal truths or something that happens habitually

definitions always use simple present tense .
You are talking about Linking verbs .are is a form of To Be . Are can be used as a linking verb as well as a Working verb . Linking verbs signify the state of being . Name is not an aspect of State . Here, are named is w orking verb
