An economic recession can result from a lowering of employment rates triggered by a drop in investment, which causes people to cut consumer spending and starts a cycle of layoffs leading back to even lower employment rates.

a. a lowering of employment rates triggered by a drop in investment, which causes people to cut consumer spending and start a cycle of layoffs leading back to even lower employment rates.

b a lowering of employment rates triggered by dropping investment, which cause people to cut consumer spending and starts a cycle of layoffs leading back to even lower employment rates.

c. falling employment rates triggered by a drop in investment, causing cutbacks in consumer spending and starting a cycle of layoffs that lead to even lower employment rates.

d. falling employment rates that are triggered by a drop in investment, causing people to cut consumer spending and starting a cycle of layoffs that lead back to even lower employment rates.

e. falling employment rates that are triggered by a drop in investment, that cause cutbacks in consumer spending and the start of a cycle of layoffs leading to even lower employment rates.

Your (a) is different from original sentence "start" and "starts". Assuming (a) has "start", and (b) has "starts".

Indeed a good question, took me a long time to decide on one answer

The sentence intends to say that "an ER can result from X triggered by Z, which causes people to do W and Y" and this "what people do as a result" leads to further drop in X again. I hope this makes sense.

The last action "what people do" is the "effect of doing W and Y", so it should be in "ing" form

IMO A
B is not parallel (to cut ....and starts....)
C it should be "leading" not "lead"
D is not parallel (to cut....and starting...) and "lead" should be "leading"
E COMMA + THAT is wrong

indeed great and hard problem, i saw it earlier and try to explain why answer is C

a)and start is wrong must be starts. also very subtle form redundancy
which causes people to cut consumer spending
it is wrong, on grounds that people are consumers, better to say:people to cut spending
also it implies that besides consumer,other types of spending exist
b)which cause-also wrong must be which causes,
also people and consumer spending
d)people- comsumer spending
e)comma after that,
and that cause-wrong, must be causes

good one. took forever to decide.
i will go wth C

A and B, which incorrectly modifes drop in investment.
E- that modifies the drop in investment (need more clarity on tht)
between C and D i will go wth C as D sounds wordy and also lead back-isnt this redudndant?

analysing this again i thnk it can be solved quickly if we undesrtand CLEARLY the meaning.
let me try:
lowering emp. rates were triggered by drop in investemt
lowering emplyemnt rates caused a cut in customer spending (obviosly people have no work->less money->less spending).

with this in my mind when we look at the option choices, A B E easily go out.
bet C and D even if we cant make out the exact option we can choose the one which sounds better and tht would be C.

In A, it's unclear whether which refers to drop or to investment. A also incorrectly implies that people...start a cycle of layoffs. Eliminate A.

In B, which cannot have both a plural verb (cause) and a singular verb (starts). Eliminate B.

In D, the combination of people and consumer spending is an error of redundancy. Eliminate D.

In E, the antecedent of that is unclear. When used correctly, that introduces a restrictive modifier -- information necessary for the meaning of the sentence -- and thus should not be preceded by a comma. Eliminate E.

The correct answer is C.
