TWICE AS MANY ....

A recent study of the United States tort system indicates that in 2004, accident, product-liability, and other tort costs totaled $260 billion, twice as many as 1990.

A twice as many as 1990
B twice as much as 1990
C twice the amount spent in 1990
D a number double those of 1990's
E a number double that of 1990's

Lets see what is the comparison here.
costs in 2004 vs costs in 1990.

A & B out because the comparison is between costs and year.
D & E out because that of/those of and 1990's is redundant.
I feel in is missing in D & E.
those of/that of in 1990 is correct.

IMO C

$260 b compared to the amount spent in 1990 is the correct comparison . Rest all are wrong .

AIMGMAT,

Yes the OA is C ...

But I want to know that why E is incorrect here ???

In E we are comapring the number 260 billion to a number that in 1990 . I thoight it shd be correct
Isn't it correct to say 260 Billion, a number double to that of 1990's then ?

Please explain .....

Which sounds better ?

What would u call Rs 100 , a number double that of xyz's ?

(E) could be correct if it were like this:

...a number that doubled that of 1990

A and B incorrectly compare 260 billion to 1990. Eliminate A and B.

In D and E, the possessive 1990's is redundant with those of and that of, each of which is sufficient to indicate possession. Eliminate D and E.

The correct answer is C.
