A. 140
B. 160
C. 170
D. 190
E. 200
Let L = Leo's CURRENT weight
Let B = his brother's CURRENT weight

Currently, their combined weight is 340 pounds
We can write: L + B = 340

If Leo gains 10 pounds, he will weigh 50% more than his brother
In other words (10 pounds more than L) = (50% more than B)
Rewrite as: L + 10 = 1.5B

What is Leo's current weight?
We have:
L + B = 340
L + 10 = 1.5B

Take top equation and solve for B to get: B = 340 - L
Now take L + 10 = 1.5B and replace B with 340-L to get: L + 10 = 1.5(340 - L)
Expand right side to get: L + 10 = 510 - 1.5L
Add 1.5L to both sides: 2.5L + 10 = 510
Subtract 10 from both sides: 2.5L = 500
Solve: L = 500/2.5 = 200

We can let Leo's current weight = L and and his brother's current weight = B.

We can create the equations:

L + 10 = 1.5B

L = 1.5B - 10

and

L + B = 340

Substituting, we have:

1.5B - 10 + B = 340

2.5B = 350

B = 140

So L = 1.5(140) - 10 = 200.
