Uma,
The definition of median is that there are as many values lower than the median as there are values higher than the median.
The range 83-89 contains the most scores (freqencies(count) of scores distributed within this range is the highest). The median is likely to fall in this range. Another way to look at is approximately 36% of the scores fall in this range which is higher than any of the other ranges.
Hope this helps!

So neways ! look at the number of entries in eachc interval !! and add them all
u get 73 entries !!
so middle number is 37th Entry !! which falls in 80-89 range

Upto range 80-89 we 29 no of scores..
from 80-89 onwards towards the end -- 27+ 18 scores = 45
So arrange them is an order
<< 50- 79 >> <<80-89 >> <<90-99>>
29 27 18
Median has to be the 37 value... that would be lying in the <<80-89>> range

Here is another way.. a little longer (text book way) but still can be done initially to drill in the concept.
1. The total of the scores is 73. The median score is 73/2 = 36.5. ----(1)
2. Create another column of cumulative totals. The cumulative total is as below:
2
12
28
55
73
3. Now the median score of 36.5 is in the range corresponding to the value
55. This is 80-89 range.
