A certain company charges $6 per package to ship packages weighing less than 2 pounds each. For a package weighing 2 pounds or more, the company charges an initial fee of $6 plus $2 per pound. If the company charged $38 to ship a certain package, which of the following was the weight of the package, in pounds?

(A) 16
(B) 17
(C) 19
(D) 20
(E) 22

oh heres an easy way. the total charge was $38.

$6 would be charged anyways because the weight is over 2 pounds.

so 38-6 and you are left with $32. this is the price charged for the over weight. The charge for overweight is $2/pound.

so just divide 32/2=16. and the answer is A.

Shldn't the answer be 17...


(1st pound costed 6$=6$) and (rest 16 pounds costed each 2$=32)

1 + 16 = 17

6 $ + 32 $ = 38$

Package weighing less than 2 pound=6$

Package weighing 2 pound or more=6$+(2$ per pound) or 6+2n[n is number of pounds]

Total charge=38.

All answer options are more than 2 pounds.

This can be expressed as below equation,

6+2n=38[n is total pounds of the package]

-->2n=32

n=16

First pound does not cost 6$.

We need to initial fee of 6$ and additional 2$ per pound

Total cost =6+2n where n is total number of pounds.

Letting n = the weight of the package, we can create the equation:

38 = 6 + 2n

32 = 2n

16 = n

Answer: A
