If 40 percent of the employees of Company X are in car pools, what percent of the employees of Company X live ten miles or less from work and are in car pools?

(C) 22%

Assume,
Total Number of Employees = 100

30 % of employees live over ten miles = 30 % (100) = 30

60 % of the employees who live over ten miles from work are in car pools
=> 60 % (30) = 18

40 percent of the employees of Company X are in car pools = 40 % (100)

= 40

Total Number of Car pools (T1) = 40

Total Number of Car pools and live more than 10 miles (T2) = 18

Total employees live ten miles or less from work and are in car pools

= (T1) - (T2)
= 40 - 18 = 22

Percent = 22%

(E) 32%
say total employees of company x= E

from the question stem, 0.3E live over ten miles and out of this 60% are in car pool. so, total 0.3E*0.6=0.18E in car pool who live over ten miles

Also, a total of 40% employees are in car pool i.e. 0.4E in car pool
so, employees who are in car pools and live 10 miles or below
=0.4E-0.18E=0.22E
which is 22% of total employees.

We can let the total number of people in Company X = 100.

Thus, since 30% of the employees lives more than ten miles from work and 60% of those employees use car pools:

100 x 0.3 x 0.6 = 18 employees live more than ten miles from work and use car pools.

We are also given that 0.4 x 100 = 40 employees use car pools.

Thus, 40 - 18 = 22 employees or 22% of the employees live 10 miles or less from work and use car pools.
