The correct idiom is so X as to Y.

In this sentence above "so as to" means "in order to"....this replacement is again incorrect.

This is correct, at least in GMAT English: on the GMAT, you want something of the form "So ADJECTIVE as to VERB" - for instance, "These rules are so arbitrary as to drive test takers crazy".

The "incorrect" form given in the original post is kosher in most dictionaries, though:

and you can find it used this way in all sorts of respected books and journals, from Dickens to the New Yorker.
