When new scientific tropes confronted the experience of alienation, the theory of atomism-the idea that all matter is composed of tiny particles-emerged as a leading cultural concept; in this idea our selves and our surroundings only offering the appearance of wholeness, beneath which there lies a splintered reality.

B - two verbs not properly connected (EMERGED AND OFFER)
C-two verbs not properly connected (EMERGED AND IS SPLINTERED)

Two verbs to be compared here is Offer and lies.
"The theory emerged in the past offer us X, besides which lies Y."

Only B satisfies this and all other options also have a meaning issue.

Meaning: The theory offers us something, but there lies a reality behind.

Answer E has two issues, no need to repeat "concept" second time after a colon and it says "Ourselves offer the appearance of wholeness", which seems wrong to me.

sentence says that when something happened, a theory emerged and then it gives further explanation of theory.

colon is appropriate to describe situations such as the one in underlined part(above). in fact, a colon is used to further explain/summarize what is said in the clause before the colon.

you missed the verb "emerged". patanjali nailed it. read his explanation.
analogy, you can't write - i posted a reply learned a new concept.

we need to repeat "a concept" because there is no other way to refer to the concept mentioned in previous clause. remember after the colon you cannot use relative modifiers such as which/that. this construction is called an appositive (google it)

it says "Ourselves offer the appearance of wholeness", which seems wrong to me

remember priority order on sc : correctness > clarity > concision
all except e) fail on correctness(1) and the point you mentioned is very loosely related to clarity(2)

Thanks Vikram.

I must admit that i completely missed out the first part "When scientists confronted.." and perceived the sentence as "The theory emerged as a concept of X and Y only offer something, besides which the reality is splintered", considering the underlined part as modifier saying how the theory emerged.

One more issue with this perceived sentence is it reads, The theory only offer - which has S-V agreement error.

By considering the first part, i can understand that "When X happened, the theory emerged as a concept" and the following tries to explain the concept.
