The total weight of a tin and the cookies it contains is 2 pounds. After Â¾ of the cookies are eaten, the tin and the remaining cookies weigh 0.8 pounds. What is the weight of the empty tin in pounds?

D. 0.5

Total wt = 2
Wt after 3/4 of the cookies are eaten = 0.8
Wt of 3/4 of the cookies = 2-0.8 = 1.2
Wt of all the cookies = 4/3 of 1.2 = 1.6
Wt of the tin =2-1.6 =0.4

Option C

t+Ñ�=2

t+1/4c=0.8

multiply the 1st expression by 1/4

so, now we have
1/4t+1/4c=0.5
minus
t+1/4c=0.8

t=4/10=0.4

We can plug in the answers, which represent the weight of the tin.
Since the total weight of the tin and the cookies is 2 pounds, the answer choices imply that the uneaten cookies weigh one of the following:
1.8, 1.7, 1.6, 1.5, 1.4.
Since 3/4 of the cookies are eaten, and 1.8, 1.7, 1.5 and 1.4 are not easily divided by 4, only answer choice C seems viable:
Amount of cookies eaten = (3/4)1.6 = 1.2.
Remaining weight = 2-1.2 = .8.
Success!
