Say there are x no. of journalists and y no. of copy editors.
Thus, 3/5 of 80 = x + y
x + y = 48. We have to get the value of x.
Let's take each statement one by one.
1) The newspaper employes more than 10 copy editors.
y > 10. With this information, we can't get the unique value of x. Insufficient.
2) There are more than 3 times as many journalists at the paper as there are copy editors.
x > 3y. With this information, we can't get the unique value of x. Insufficient.
(1) and (2) together
Given y > 10, the minimum value of y = 11; thus, given x > 3y, the minimum value of x = 34. Since x + y = 34 + 11 = 45 < 48. x = 34 is a qualified value.
Let's take y = 12. At y = 12, the minimum value of x = 37. Since x + y = 37 + 12 = 49 > 48. x = 37 is NOT a qualified value.
Thus, x = 34. A unique value. Sufficient.
