The word being--> experts please explain

by atulmangal » Fri Apr 01, 2011 12:34 am
The word being appears four times in the following passage. Choose the number(s) of those that should be deleted in order to improve the passage.

"I cannot believe that you are always (1) being so rude to Mr. Pon," said Archie to his younger sister. " For (2) being an old man from the other side of the country, Mr. Pon is a very nice neighbor," he added. "I cannot stand (3) being taken advantage of," replied Elizabeth. "I am just (4) being honest."

(A) 1 only

(B) 4 only

(C) 1 and 2 only

(D) 3 and 4 only

(E) 1, 2, 3 , and 4

Most of the people face problems with the use of the word BEING...though in GMAT, the answer choice using this word is almost always wrong but in some questions in OG i have seen the OA having this word..if some expert can explain in which case this word should be used, that gonna be really helpful..Thanks

"I cannot stand being taken for granted" .. why you both rejected 3...

Being can be used as gerund .. So I am also in agreement with 2.

C/E for me

I am just honest... :( / I am just being honest

Being honest sounds okay to me

E for me
First take: 640 (50M, 27V) - RC needs 300% improvement
Second take: coming soon..

Read the question. Delete being from each quote and judge the result.

(1):
I cannot believe that you are always so rude to Mr. Pon.

The quote above works.
Since being can be deleted from (1), eliminate any answer choice that doesn't include (1). Eliminate B and D.

(2):
For an old man from the other side of the country, Mr. Pon is a very nice neighbor.

The quote above works.
Since being can be deleted from (2), eliminate any answer choice that doesn't include (2). Eliminate A.

(3):
I cannot stand taken advantage of.

Doesn't work. The phrase taken advantage of cannot serve as the direct object of the verb stand.
Since being cannot be deleted from (3), eliminate any answer choice that includes (3). Eliminate E.

The correct answer is C.

(4):
I am just honest.

Doesn't work. Removing being changes the meaning. The speaker is not saying that she is honest all the time but that she is being honest at this particular moment.

The take-away:
Be very skeptical of -- but do not immediately eliminate -- an answer choice that includes being. If you're down to two answer choices, one of which includes being, and both of which seem to be free of errors, eliminate the answer choice that includes being and choose the other answer choice. But bear in mind that there usually will be a more compelling reason to eliminate the incorrect answer choice.
