This is a good one for plugging in. Since it's a percent problem, 100 is a good number to use. So let's say there are 100 people. Then there are 40 men and 60 women. 30 percent of 40 is 12, so 12 men drove and 28 took the train. All 60 women drive. So 28/100 people drive or 28%. So the answer is B.

We can let the total number of workers = 100.

Thus, we have 40 men, so 0.7 x 40 = 28 take the train. Since no women take the train to work, the percent of workers who take the train to work is 28/100 = 28%.

Hi Anaira Mitch,

We're told that in a downtown office, 40 percent of the workers are men and 60 percent are women and of the male workers, 30 percent drive to work and the rest take the train, while ALL of the female workers drive to work. We're asked for the percent of workers who take the train to work. This question can be solved rather easily by TESTing VALUES, but you can also use a logic 'shortcut' - and the spread of the Answer choices - to answer the question without much math at all.

Based on the information that we're given, the only employees who take the train are MEN. Since 40% of the total employees are men, the correct answer must be LESS than 40%. We're also told that MOST of the men take the train, so the correct answer has to be GREATER than half of 40%. Thus, the correct answer is between 20% and 40%. There's only one answer that matches....

Final Answer: B
