extra informations are make or break sentences...they either make perfect sense or they bring different meaning to the sentence...here through out the sentences, it wasnt clear about the subject making cases...so extra information here makes subject clear and brings out the intended meaning clearly.

i find choice B to be gramatically correct ( pls correct me if i am wrong) ... and B does not add any extra information... why not B??

did you check " aid" in B v/s "assistance" in other options, particularly A
As far as possible, correct answer will rectify mistakes in orginal sentence Option A without changing any other elements that are correct. In A, "assitance " is not incorrect and hence we should try to preserve that. E not only preserves "assitance" but also brings more clarity while B doesnot.

whenever you find the entire sentence underline, most of the time the OA is E or D

Start reading from Bottom.

Although this is not a rule but I found it very useful.

Sorry to have entered this discussion, but I have a question in this Kaplan GMAT question. This question is from Kaplan 800.

A report released by the American Diabetes Association maintains that much of the increase in cases of type II diabetes can be attributed to the poor eating and exercise habits of young Americans.

(A) much of the increase in cases of type II diabetes can be attributed
(B) many of the increase in cases of type II diabetes are attributable
(C) they can attribute much of the increase in cases of type II diabetes
(D) doctors attribute much of the increase in cases of type II diabetes
(E) many of the cases of increased type II diabetes can be attributed

OA A

Here too we can consider option D which includes "doctor" but the explanation in the book states that as doctor is not given in the original sentence we cannot say for sure who has attributed the increase in cases. As doctor in the original sentence is not given we can take passive voice sentence instead.
But if we apply the same logic to below question then B should be right instead of E as litigators is not given in the original sentence. Please explain this...

a ...

b Cases can often be made against otherwise elusive criminals with the aid of informants.

c With the assistance of informants, we can often make cases against otherwise elusive criminals

d Otherwise elusive criminals can often have cases made against them with the assistance of informants

e With the assistance of informants, litigators can often make cases against otherwise elusive criminals

OA is E

One problem with B in the original one is that it sounds like it is criminals who have the aid of informants.
