query...grammar

here are two sentences...are they correct..as per Gmat grammar??

1.Cold-blooded species like lizards, amphibians and insects rely on the environment to regulate their body temperatures -- basking in the sun to warm up, or seeking shade to cool off.


2. Heating of 1 degree Celsius would have a smaller impact on metabolism for a cold-blooded, land-dwelling species that lives in the Arctic than on one that lives in the tropics,
..... these sentences are from reputed source. so, i doubt.. i may be wrong. so, to be confirm..i posted them here.
my doubt-

1. isn't it should be such as.(not like)..??
2 is here use of .....species that lives.... correct.??

if #2 is written as-

2a) Heating of 1 degree Celsius would have a smaller impact on metabolism for a cold-blooded, land-dwelling species that live in the Arctic than those that live in the tropics.


is this correct..??

i agree as per gmat english ....it should have been such as...

But i think they will say ...cold blooded species(whole family) is being compared with animals like liazards,amphibains etc

Read option like this..
Cold blooded species(Reptiles) like lizards,amphibians ......rely on ...

not 100% correct if we consider logic only ....But this is how it goes...

1. Like can be correct only if the authors intention is to say that cold blooded species similar to but not including lizards, amphibians and insects rely on the environment to regulate their body temperatures.

2. species that lives is correct. Note the adjective before species - a cold-blooded, land-dwelling indicates that we are talking of a single species, hence singular verb is required.

In fact, it is entirely the article a that makes the difference. Remove it, and the sentence would be correct with that live.
