The record of the past is always incomplete, and the historian who writes about it inevitably reflects the preoccupations of their own time.

(A) the historian who writes about it inevitably reflects
(B) the historian writing about it will inevitably reflect
(C) a historian writing about it inevitably reflects
(D) writing about it, it is inevitable for historians to reflect
(E) historians in writing about it inevitably reflect

OA E plz explain!!

The option (OA) is correct as it implies the proper meaning.
If u para phrase it the sentence will make sense "historians inevitably reflect the preoccupations of their own time in writing about it "
Historians can reflect... how will they reflect... in writings... what will they reflect... the preoccupation of their own time.
Other options implicate a meaning those do not say where the historians are reflecting the preoccupation of their own time. Of course in writing.

The issue of S-V agreement exists in this sentence. Look at the non-underline portion of the sentence. Bolded portion "their"

so we nee plural subject - historians is required. so only D and E remain.


D is wordy and akward.

Hey crazy 800 brilliant explaination. I think this is the way we would be able to think when we are giving the exams. Going deeplu into meaning of each & every sentence will probaly exhaust us before the end of the exam.

non-underlined part has 'their' so A is wrong because subject is 'the historian' singular.
B and C are out because of the same reason.

First I thought that E is wrong, and awkward, but if you read it closely then E more concise. Here is how.

E states 'historians in [their] writing, about it [past] inevitably reflect [their own time]

D is wordy and not clear

I don't understand GMAT expects clear and conciseness from test takers but why they are not concise in all options?
