In E, which you chose, the word bought is redundant since purchase has been mentioned already.

In A, which seems to refer to four cents an acre, implying that FOUR CENTS AN ACRE more than doubled the country's size. Not the intended meaning. Also, that lacks a clear antecedent. Eliminate A.

In B, it lacks a clear antecedent. Also, doubling and brought are not parallel. Eliminate B.

In D, doubling the country's size, bringing should be connected by a conjunction such as and. Eliminate D.

In E, acquiring and bought are redundant: when the United States BOUGHT the 828,000 square miles, it was -- by definition -- ACQUIRING the 828,000 square miles. Eliminate E.

The correct answer is C.
