In A, which seems to refer to four cents an acre, implying that FOUR CENTS AN ACRE more than doubled the country's size. Not the intended meaning. Also, that lacks a clear antecedent. In B, it lacks a clear antecedent. Also, doubling and brought are not parallel. Eliminate B.
In D, doubling the country's size, bringing should be connected by a conjunction such as and. Eliminate D.
In E, acquiring and bought are redundant: when the United States BOUGHT the 828,000 square miles, it was -- by definition -- ACQUIRING the 828,000 square miles. Eliminate E.
The correct answer is C.
